Kshs 200 billion required to develop transboundary water and power projects in the Nile Equatorial Lakes region
The Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP) one of the investment arms of the regional ten- member Nile Basin Initiative, has identified and prioritized 37 projects out of a pipeline of 70 water and power investment projects for which it needs Kshs 200 billion for preparation and majority for implementation together with the member countries over the next five years. The investment projects will contribute to respective beneficiary member country development, stimulate further economic growth, foster regional integration, promote trade and enhance further Nile basin cooperation among the riparian states
Speaking while opening the NBI/ NELSAP Investment Projects Conference today in Nairobi, Cabinet Secretary for Water and Irrigation Honorable Eugene Wamalwa said that Kenya is fully in support of developing the in-country and shared water resources between the Nile Basin countries as this will elevate the economic status of the people in each individual nation.
